Security contracts for tender

Security tenders can take on many shapes and forms, as the public and private sectors adapt to cover different risks in the market, and to keep both sites and people safe and secure. As such, there are hundreds of tender opportunities within the security sector.

Typical security services procured by local councils, the NHS, and housing associations etc. will cover:

  • Manned guarding security services
  • Car park security
  • Event security
  • Corporate security
  • Cash collection services
  • Keyholding services
  • Cyber security
  • Concierge services
  • CCTV and fire alarms, and much more.

Public and private sector bodies will have many security contracts in place to manage day-to-day services like manned guarding for buildings or car park security, but also to mitigate future risks and threats such as large-scale events and terrorism. For large organisations, such as the NHS, services like cyber security are increasingly important as technology advances, and these contracts may cover a vast number of sites and potential threats.

It is also very common to see security and associated services integrated into broader facilities management contracts. Cleaning, waste management and grounds maintenance services may be procured alongside security services, under one total FM contract or framework agreement. This is common for contracts at sites such as hospitals, universities, and local authority buildings for either a total FM provider, or sector specialists if the framework agreement is split into lots.

We regularly post live tender opportunities for security contracts, and you can browse contract notices that may be of interest to your organisation HERE.

Security tenders

Which topics can you expect to see in a security tender response?

Like most public sector contracts, one of the top objectives is that the buyer is assured of your services, your track record and your quality of service. With security contract bids this is especially important, as you may be looking after the safety and security of important sites or the general public – which, in itself, is a critical task.

It is likely the awarding authority will require your company to hold certain memberships, such as an SIA licence, and possibly ISO 9001:2015 and Cyber Essentials, if relevant to the individual contract. These requirements may be mandatory and listed as a pass/fail, so it is important to check documentation fully. Health and safety is another topic that is highly likely to be included in the invitation to tender document for security bids. You may need to provide risk assessments, examples of lone working, relevant staff training etc. to the buyer as part of your tender response. If you are providing guarding services or keyholding services, you may also be evaluated on how responsive you are and on your method for remote monitoring and communication.

Depending on the type of security service, you may also be required, or invited, to undertake a site visit as part of the procurement process. It is a good idea to visit the site if you are given the opportunity to gather any local knowledge and to personalise your tender response accordingly.

Event security tenders

High-profile events require a great deal of organisation and security, especially if they are dealing with large numbers of the public. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many events across the UK, but in a post-covid world there are typically numerous event security tenders, which can be quite competitive. It is here you may see the larger companies, such as G4S, providing these contracts due to their size and track record in the industry. However, many smaller events also require security personnel and can be suitable for SMEs to bid for. These contracts are likely to require security guards, and also security equipment as part of the overall service requirement.

The Executive Compass team have worked on hundreds of successful bids for security contracts over the years, including:

  • Great Ormond Street Hospital Security Services
  • Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust Manned Guarding
  • Swansea University Provision of Security Services
  • Bristol City Council Fire Alarm and Smoke Vent Systems
  • Derby City Council Provision of Security Services
  • Tower Hamlets Community Housing Provision of Concierge and Fire Marshal Service
  • Transport for Wales Crowd Management Services
