Round 2: Picking a theme
A good bid should be like a good book. It should have a beginning middle and end and hold your interest throughout. However, unlike a good book it should have no surprises!

Before a bid writing consultant begins to write a bid they carefully gather all the facts and figures about the company and attempt to determine what the core capabilities of the business are. Technical ability is one of the core themes of most bids. It does not matter whether you are your bid writing consultant is writing a bid for a nursery, a window cleaning contract, a hair dressing salon or an engineering or construction project, technical competence is always expected.

You can use technical competence as a theme and many companies do. But some bid writing consultants will be wary of attempting to win it on technical competence alone. You have to very sure that you are the best or that the reason for your technical competence is not easily replicated or that it has not already been replicated! A client expects you to be technically competent whatever you are offering. You must therefore offer something more. It is this added value that can become your theme and it does not have to be just one element it can be a range of operational , management or support functions that when combined together give you your competitive edge. Whatever it is you need to weave it into your bid.

A good bid writing consultant will be able to do this for you, but if you are writing a bid yourself you need to think of how you can select your strongest theme and then get it into the bid.

• Be consistent
• Do not pick price as your theme
• Make sure you explain why it is a benefit
• Do not just focus on features
• Weave it into your bid and make it look natural
• Do not contradict yourself in different sections
• Make sure your bid writing sections are mutually supportive

Remember that when writing a bid you need a story but not at the expense of particular sections. Do not leave responses have finished and always try to “sum up” each section of the bid before moving on.
