Article Writing for Beginners

Article writing can really raise the profile of your business, its easy and its free.

I have been writing articles of various sorts for years so when I became self employed and needed to raise the profile of the business it seemed a natural thing to do. Plus it is relatively easy to do and free!!

The article writing I am talking about is specifically aimed at generating income for your business and not article writing as a business in itself. This is important, before you write your article you should think why you are writing it.

So with that in mind here are some of the things have worked for me over the last couple of months.

1. Titles are really important. Make sure the title catches the reader’s eye and of course make sure it catches Google’s eye.
2. Most article marketing sites allow you to insert a paragraph as a “taster”. Make the most of this, after the title it is the second most important way of hooking your reader.
3. Make the content interesting and try to be original.
4. Do not make it too sales orientated. Offer good information, hints and tips and engage with the reader.
5. Keep the article around 500-700 words. I made my early ones too long and it switches people off.
6. Make sure your grammar, spelling and punctuation are accurate.
7. You are probably better off focussing your article on a particular topic and appealing to a narrower audience and giving “real” tips rather than motherhood and apple pie advice.
8. Most article sites have what they call a “resource box” or an “about the author” section. This is your chance to say a little about you and your business. Do not overload it with links and text. Keep it short and punchy with a link to your site.
9. Don’t overload your article with too many keywords. You can research around the topic and use it for both your title and content.
10. Write an article that can be split into a couple of parts. That way you can write more articles in less time. An example would have been to split this into two “5 Tips” pieces.

Most of all enjoy it! Let the words flow, if it feels like a chore, it will read like a bore. There are lots of marketing sites out there, they are free and easy to use and most importantly, it works. Some sites are better than others and as yet, with the exception of 4N, I have not had a consistent performer.
For this reason I have found it better to post on multiple sites. I post to around ten sites, all free, all easy to use and all work to some degree for different topics
