A shortlist emerged last week - four months after more than 50 contractors received pre-qualification questionnaires for the six-year health agreement.
Seven of the eight incumbents of ProCure 21 are understood to be in the running for places on its replacement.
Balfour Beatty, Bam Construct, Interserve, Kier and Laing O'Rourke were all thought to have picked up tender documents.
A Sir Robert McAlpine/Vinci joint venture also claimed its place on the shortlist, as did Medicinq - a consortium led by Midas and recently joined by Shepherd.
The other contractor on the existing ProCure 21 framework, Costain, opted not to submit a PQQ in favour of focusing on opportunities in other sectors.
Four new names are understood to complete the shortlist, from which a maximum of six winners will be chosen.
Willmott Dixon, Bovis Lend Lease and Miller are believed to be joined by 2VB - a consortium of Volker Fitzpatrick, Thomas Vale and Henry Boot.
Although the stringent prequalification process is thought to have put off many, 18 contractors submitted PQQs. Mace, Morgan Ashurst and Wates are rumoured to have done so but missed out on a place on the shortlist.
The successful bidders will battle for up to £750m of health work per year. Tenders are due in by January, and the winners are expected to be announced in April. A source said: “Everyone now knows what they have to do - it will be a tough cost and technicalbased process.
"The scores from the pre-qualification process will not carry through, and the Department of Health has been clear that it views this as a new framework with new rules and governance.”
