Writing Winning Bid and Tender Proposals

Posted on 11-01-2010 at 08:30

This blog continues the theme of making your company attractive to the client. It doesn’t matter whether you are writing a bid, proposal, tender, grant application or completing a PQQ you have to look good to the client or you will not win the work.
A common mistake that bid and tender writers make is to boast about the company and say how great they are with little real thought of the clients actual needs. Sometimes they also just write what they think the client wants to hear. This approach is transparent and is not attractive.
Before forming a relationship with you, the client will want to get to know you. Your bid or tender proposal should reflect your goals and vision, yes you need to show them how good you are, but long lasting relationships are not built on bluster and bravado, they are built on trust and mutual respect.
Your bid or tender should be attractive, the introduction should grab their attention and make them want to read on. Unless you are selling a commodity product with no added value, you need to seduce your customers with your story. Is your story something that the client wants to become part of, to join in with and retell?
Think of your bid or tender as a first date or meeting. If you’ve got your eye on a particular customer, then you need to tell the right story (chat up line?). Is it about a short-term future together or a long term relationship? Is it about getting something that you both know you want, or is it about having a future together?
If you want a future together or if things are complicated, you need to get to know your customer before you’ll know what buttons to push. You can work on your chat up lines all you want, but if you’re not willing to invest in getting to know your customer before you try to seduce them, you’re probably going to end up going home alone. (Again)
