One of the more encouraging outcomes of the
current economic outlook is the growing
number of home based businesses flourishing
throughout the UK. And thanks to advances in
the telecoms sector and the greater availability
of broadband, it seems this phenomenon is
particularly prevalent in the North East.
At a recent roundtable event organised by the
North East Chamber of Commerce during Small
Business Week where the results of the ‘Business
Pulse Survey 2009’were revealed, an amazing
49% of the North East businesses which
responded were home based.
The survey, which looks at general prospects for
business across the UK, consulted with 7,000
businesses, making it the largest business
survey undertaken during 2009.
Of the 224 regional businesses that took part,
60% had less than five employees, highlighting
the regional importance of these smaller
organisations within the SME sector.
Of particular significance for the Work Wise
campaign, one in five respondents said they
had used technology to support flexible
working during the last year and believe that it
was one of the most significant and positive
impacts of the recession.
Around 20 public and private sector businesses
participated in the roundtable discussion
including Roberta Blackman-Woods, MP for
Durham, Barclays Bank, BT, Business Link,
Cathedral Lettings and Work Wise North East.
