How to Tender How to Tender
How to Tender

How to tender or perhaps this should be called to tender or not to tender, that is the question!
There is no great mystery to writing a tender. You know your business inside out, you know that you can deliver the work, you have all the processes in place so all you have to do is write the tender and describe what you do and how you do it, right?

Well no, that is the exact problem with tenders that are written by business owners. They are too descriptive, usually lack detail where it counts, are full of assumptions, are poorly structured and are full of typing and grammatical errors.
The good news is that all these common tender writing mistakes are easily fixed. Learning how to write a tender is not too difficult, a general set of rules can be provided and templates and frameworks, in some instances, can help considerably.
One of the more common problems that I see is actual tender writing style and ability and this is much harder to improve. Some people simply struggle to express themselves with the written word, throw in time pressure for writing a tender and unfortunately you end up with a disaster.

I am going to write a series of practical tips on how to tender and it will start well before the actual writing process, but to get it going here is a good tip “ keep it structured and keep it simple”.
When you write a tender there really is no need for florid, overblown and extravagant language. Keep it simple. I once read the word “while slumbering” in a tender. Now I would not have expected “while taking 40 winks” but “whilst asleep” would have been much clearer.

Keep your sentences short and make sure that paragraphs naturally link or at least where they do not, that there is a clear ending and beginning. Do not include any padding, make an impact, punchy sentences, lots of benefits and ensure it is clear what you are offering.
