Bid Writing and Tender Writing
Bid Writing and Bidding for work
I was recently asked about the difference between a bid and a tender. My answer is that a bid is exactly the same as a tender. This is obviously in the context of writing bids and tenders and not bidding on an on line auction or bidding to be top of the league or even “I bid you farewell”.
The dictionary gives a number of variations for the meaning of bid but it is pretty much interchangeable with the word tender. I know that I and most of my clients use the term interchangeably and if I am asked to write a bid or for bid advice, I think of tender. Funnily enough though I don’t think it works as often the other way round.
I think that the term bid is used more often than tender in everyday life and is often used when in fact they mean quote or bid in one of its other contexts.
The bottom line is that in terms of the procurement process there is no difference between the terms bid and tender.
Yesterday I had to write a proposal for a client and I began mulling over two things. Firstly, the difference between a proposal and a bid and secondly, is there a term to describe the document that I write to attempt to procure work. I am effectively writing a bid to write a bid. Obviously proposal is quite sufficient and capable, I was just wondering!
I also wonder if anyone has or is, writing a bid, to write a bid, for writing a bid? No this is not for keyword density for the blog.
A small independent bid writer writes a bid to support a bid company, who in turn are writing a bid to say a major construction company to write a bid for a PFI!! Phew!
So what would the original bid be called?
Can I make a proposal to present an offer to write a bid for a tender?
Can I bid a tender farewell? Tender as in bid but tender as in kind hearted?
Can there be a tender bid? A sort of kind hearted proposal?
The madness continues!!
